Honeywell Ka-band antenna for Inmarsat’s GX Aviation service.
Honeywell Aerospace has signed a contract with San Antonio-based GDC Technics to develop Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) on Boeing and Airbus aircraft for Honeywell’s JetWave satcom system.
JetWave is the aeronautical satellite connectivity hardware that supports Inmarsat’s forthcoming Ka-band Jet ConneX (JX) Wi-Fi service, set for global launch in the second half of 2015.
Announced at the Middle East Business Aviation (MEBA) show in Dubai, Honeywell said GDC Technics is to develop STCs for the JetWave hardware on the Airbus A319, A330 and A340 aircraft as well as the Boeing 737, 747, 777 and 787.
This includes the Boeing Business Jet, Airbus Corporate Jet and commercial configurations.
Mike Beazley, vice president Global Sales, Business and General Aviation, Honeywell Aerospace, said: “Through this agreement with GDC Technics, Boeing and Airbus operators will soon be able to easily upgrade their aircraft with one of the most advanced and capable in-flight connectivity systems on the market.
“Jet ConneX will bring high speed, consistent global in-flight internet connectivity via Wi-Fi to the cockpit and cabin and we expect to see significant demand for the technology, particularly for long haul commercial and VIP planes.”
Inmarsat’s JX service and Honeywell’s JetWave will be capable of delivering broadband speeds, allowing passengers to video-conference, send and receive large files and stream high-quality television and movies while on the move.
The system has a headline figure of 33 Mbps delivered to its small lightweight tail-mounted antenna. Larger aircraft, such as the Airbus and Boeing models listed, will be capable of receiving data at up to 50 Mbps via the Honeywell-developed fuselage-mounted antenna.
Inmarsat has one of its I-5 Ka-band satellites in orbital position with two more due to launch in the first half of 2015.
